Stage Gates. Many projects muddle on for months and years after they should have been terminated. Terminating a project is a tough decision to take because often a lot of money and resources will have been spent and a lot of “ego” will have been invested in the project. But whilst terminating a project appears expensive it is far more expensive to allow projects just to trundle on. An integral part of checking and stopping projects is the use of Gates. At the end of each stage the project will need to pass through a “gate” to move onto the next stage. This means the Project Manager will have to satisfy the Project board and Project sponsor that all the necessary steps have been completed satisfactorily and that it is appropriate to move on. The Gates provide a go/no go decision at each key step of the project. At this early part of the project it is appropriate to agree the stage gates that a project needs to pass through and agree the “tests” that it needs to meet to continue.
